Our commitment
EyecareSearch exists to help people find eye care. That includes people who are blind or have low vision, people who navigate by keyboard or switch device, people who use screen readers or magnification, and people with cognitive or motor disabilities. We treat accessibility as part of building the directory, not as an afterthought, and we fix reported barriers as ordinary bugs.
Conformance standard
We target the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. EyecareSearch.com is currently partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA: most of the site meets the standard, and the exceptions we know about are listed under Known limitations below.
What we have done
- A “Skip to content” link on every page, so keyboard users can bypass the navigation.
- Semantic page structure — one main heading per page, proper heading order, and named landmark regions.
- Visible keyboard focus indicators on links, buttons and form fields.
- Text alternatives for images, and labels on every search, filter and listing-submission field.
- Body text and interface text that meets the 4.5:1 contrast minimum, verified against every background colour we use.
- Pages that reflow to a 320 pixel viewport without horizontal scrolling, and that work at 200% zoom.
- Respect for the operating system's “reduce motion” setting.
- Touch and click targets of at least 24×24 pixels.
- A list view of every search result, so nothing depends on being able to use the map.
Compatibility
EyecareSearch.com is built to work with current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on desktop and mobile, used together with the screen reader built into or commonly paired with that platform (NVDA and JAWS on Windows, VoiceOver on macOS and iOS, TalkBack on Android). The site is not tested against browsers more than two major versions old, and may not work well with them.
We do not use an accessibility overlay, toolbar or plug-in widget. We fix the underlying pages instead.
Known limitations
We publish these openly rather than claim a conformance we have not reached:
- Interactive map. The map on search results comes from a third-party mapping library and is difficult to operate by keyboard or screen reader. Every result shown on the map is also available in the list view, which is fully keyboard accessible, and the list is the default view.
- Practice-supplied content. Listing text, logos and photographs are submitted by the practices themselves. We ask for descriptive alternative text at submission, but we cannot guarantee the quality of every description. Report any listing that is unusable and we will correct it.
- Linked practice websites. Once you follow a link out to a practice's own website, that site is outside our control and is not covered by this statement.
How we test
EyecareSearch.com is assessed by self-evaluation. We run automated checks (axe-core, against WCAG 2.1 and 2.2 A and AA rules) across the home page, search results, listing pages, articles and the listing-submission form, and we pair that with manual testing: keyboard-only navigation, screen-reader review, 200% zoom, and 320 pixel reflow. Automated testing alone catches only part of what matters, so the manual pass is what decides whether a page is acceptable. The most recent review was completed in September 2026.
