I chose Unger Eye Care because they were listed as the best option under my insurance plan, and unfortunately my experience has been incredibly disappointing. To be fair, Ashley was more than helpful. She was kind, professional, and genuinely caring and thoughtful throughout this entire process. Because of her I feel a three star is fair. If it was just her I was rating, she’d receive a full 5 star. My frustration is not directed toward her or the doctor personally. My issue is with the overall business practices, lack of transparency, and how concerns were handled by management. Her name was Shirley. From the beginning, fees, policies, and financial obligations were not clearly explained either verbally or in writing. What should have been a straightforward eye exam and glasses purchase quickly turned into a confusing process filled with unexpected charges, policies, and “all sales are final” clauses that were never properly disclosed upfront. Due to a personal family emergency and unexpected financial strain, I attempted to cancel the order before completion because I no longer felt comfortable with the cost. Instead of being met with compassion, understanding or reasonable solutions for my current limitations, I was told I would still be responsible for charges, additional cancellation fees, and payment for lenses still “in process.” It was also never clearly disclosed to me that I would not receive the glasses until the balance was paid in full, despite already putting down $600 and agreeing to a payment plan of $142 per month for three months. That information would have significantly impacted my decision moving forward, and I believe it should have been communicated clearly from the start. The most frustrating part was speaking with management. Rather than showing empathy or trying to resolve the situation professionally, the conversation felt cold, dismissive, and entirely centered around policy over people. I left the interaction feeling defeated, taken advantage of, and pressured into paying for services and products I neither fully understood nor knowingly agreed to. I understand businesses have policies. However, transparency, communication, and compassion toward patients should matter just as much as protecting sales. Based on my experience, I would strongly encourage anyone considering Unger Eye Care to ask detailed questions about every fee, policy, cancellation clause, and financial obligation before agreeing to anything. They have been reported to the BBB and a complaint has been filled with the FTC.

The staff are great and very helpful. What I don’t care for is when you pay for a lens warranty and still have to pay 25$ deductible? Per glasses. I think it’s wrong and I also don’t understand why they don’t make better scratch resistant coatings and lenses unless it’s on purpose so they can keep charging you extra. I really believe that the eyeglass industry is a scam. Overpriced and jacked frame costs just because of the name of who designed them? I call BS

Drs' Alice and Tom Unger are so great. They are very friendly and pleasant. They don't rush you in appointments. And are very thorough, and explaine everything. I had an emergency and Dr Alice met me at her office and treated me right away. In 40 years i have never had or heard of any doctor doing that. Thank you Dr Alice and Dr Tom for putting patients first.

I recommend highly. Very professional and personal. Place is very clean with a good selection of frames. I was there for hard contacts and the exam process was easy. The machines they use are state of art. When I got my contacts they fit perfectly! Highest kiddos to all the staff!

I’ve been a patient for 20+ years. I highly recommend Unger Eyecare. They are the best around for eye care and are great with emergency appointments due to injuries. That being said, it seems the Edwardsville location doesn’t have all the equipment the Troy location has. I had my appointment today in Edwardsville; but, I had to make another appointment to get a test in Troy that Edwardsville couldn’t do. This was my first time at the Edwardsville location. They were still superior in knowledge and skill. I just think I’ll stick to the Troy location in the future, to avoid the inconvenience of multiple testing appointments.
