Costco La Mesa Optometrist In February 2026, I had an appointment to get fitted for contacts. The appointment went well until it was time to put the contacts in my eyes. After many unsuccessful tries, the assistant grabbed a set of their contacts and put them in and out of their eye. After another unsuccessful try, the assistant grabbed my contacts and said they will put them in my eyes. Without washing their hands. I immediately stopped the appointment. The doctor charged me for the appointment and said I can reschedule putting the contacts in and out at a later time. After months of life getting in the way, I rescheduled my appointment for putting in contacts for August 2026. The office charged me for another eye exam even though the previous exam was good for a year. This office does not practice good hygiene by washing hands after touching eyes and doesn’t honor their own prescriptions. It is unfortunate because the eyeglass appointment in July of 2025 went so well. Their are plenty of other practices to choose from.

Buying glasses here is like lighting your money on fire. No money and no glasses. Go literally anywhere else. They won’t pick up the phone and when they do, they either hang up on you immediately (within two seconds, before even saying hello) or just leave the line open and ignore it for 5+ minutes, after which they hang up on you anyway. Also, we ordered a pair of glasses that then did not fit the way the original model had. No idea why a business would have customers try on a different model of glasses than the one they intend to deliver. The manager (Trisha, who is snippy) said she had re-ordered the same glasses. (Mind you, she didn’t contact us. I had to call repeatedly.) It’s been three weeks… no contact. After calling many times I once spoke to an actual staff member who said I would have to talk to the manager directly. Spoiler alert: she wasn’t there the last two times I tried to visit in person. Costco is normally so responsive and awesome. Not this optical department!
I went here yesterday (Tuesday-5:30pm) and the lady at the front desk was very rude. When speaking to my father her tone and wording were highly unprofessional--condescending. She was using words like "even" and "actually" when we were asking fair and reasonable questions. I also noticed that she flipped her name tag over so it wouldn't be visible for us to see. This lady needs a firm reprimanding from her boss because this is unacceptable treatment to potential customers and most importantly PATIENTS. This is a branch of healthcare and I expect the best behavior at all time. Please go to the location in Bonita if you can because the people that work there "actually" care about their patients.
Don't bother calling them, they hang up on you. I tried calling to see what their hours are to make an appointment for an eye exam. I initially called them on a Tuesday at 4:48pm and they didn't answer so I assumed they were closed. I called again on a Wednesday 11:08am and after multiple rings, they pick it up and hang up the call. I called back a few more times in case it was a connection issue and they continued to hang up even after I said hello. I then called the general associate line to see if they knew and they transferred me over to the optical department and they still hung up. The only excuse would be if they are on lunch but they JUST opened 1-2 hrs ago and they could've either 1) let me know they are on lunch and tell me when to call back later or 2) just let the phone ring and maybe I can leave a message, NOT hang up the call. After looking at all the other reviews, I don't even want to go to them anymore. I usually love costco but their optical department is embarrassing with no customer service.
I took 4 visits before I walked away with correct lenses. I ordered 2 pairs of glasses. One pair worked great but the other pair required me to tilt my head way back to read out of the bottom of my glasses to read. For distance I had to look out of the top of the glasses. Secondary to a back injury tilting my head way all day caused pretty bad neck pain. I returned to Costco and explained that my sunglasses worked great but my regular ones did not. I was told by the gentleman working there that this was how progressive lenses worked. I said I didn’t have these issues with my last pair of progressive lenses. He suggested that I go back to the business that made my previous pair or he could make me two glasses. One for reading and one for distance.this guy did not inspect my lenses and sent me on my way. I wore my sunglasses for half of a day because I forgot my regular glasses at home. I realized the lenses worked really well for me. I returned to Costco for a fourth time with the solution of making the lenses similar to each other. I talked with the same guy and he argued with me that they are the same. He told me that it wouldn’t make a difference. I stood my ground and insisted and we continued to argue. My sunglass lenses work great and my others are horrible. Once he realized I wasn’t going to go away he finally inspect my glasses. He made some marks on the lenses and used some binocular looking tool to inspect my eyes and glasses. At this point he realized that the original person that set up my lenses put the reading section of the lenses in the wrong spot. He sent them out to have new lenses made. The was no apology. I do not recommend this business.
