The office took my medical insurance card, but nobody explained why it was being used or that it could affect my coverage and out-of-pocket costs. After the appointment, I was unexpectedly charged $60 for the refraction portion of the exam needed for my glasses prescription. When I questioned the charge, I was simply told it “wasn’t covered.” I later found out the issue was how the visit had been coded and billed through medical insurance instead of vision. Something that was never explained to me at the appointment. Now I am being told that my medical insurance denied the claim and that the office “cannot” bill my vision insurance afterward, potentially leaving me responsible for a bill of over $400 for what I believed was a routine eye exam. What bothers me most is the complete lack of transparency. Had someone clearly explained upfront that billing the visit through medical insurance because of diabetes could affect my coverage or leave me with hundreds of dollars in unexpected charges, I absolutely would have asked questions before agreeing to proceed. I was also disappointed in how the situation was handled when I called with concerns. The staff answering the phones came across as rude and dismissive, and the manager’s response was very matter-of-fact, basically implying that this is “just how it works” and that I should have already known that. Patients should not be made to feel stupid for being confused about complicated insurance billing practices that were never explained to them in the first place. Patients deserve honest communication, transparency about billing, and respectful customer service, especially when those billing decisions can drastically affect what they owe out of pocket. Not everyone has hundreds of dollars available for surprise medical bills, and patients should never be blindsided this way.
