You won't believe this... I actually enjoyed my emergency surgery visit...on my birthday! Day 1 of our vacation, I had an unfortunate accident hiking which ended in being told I needed emergency surgery on my broken knee... "happy birthday to me" right? Upon arrival; everything went pretty fast and the nurses were VERY attentive to making me comfortable. From heat packs, to blankets, and one even brushing and braiding my hair...( I wish I remembered all their names) but honestly there were so many during my stay. GO TEAM! When it was time for surgery, I was wheeled to another room where I met the Anesthesiologists and their humor was exactly what I needed. They were extremely helpful explaining everything that was about to take place and what to expect afterwards. Since this was my first surgery ever I had many fears. I was asked which song I wanted to enter the OR with and ACDC "Thunderstruck" seemed just the vibe.. "I was shaking at the knees" but wanted to pump up the morning! After surgery, I woke to a team that honestly made me want to cry. THIS is health CARE. Everyone kept me in good spirits, they even went as far as educating my options for my return to Florida and faxing over my paperwork so when I got home I had a Doctor to take over...I wish I could've stay with OHSU but... did I mention I was on vacation? Thank you to the WHOLE OHSU team...from check in to check out... every single person in there was so positive and it made me think "there's hope in this world." I want the team to get to read this, that they know how much I appreciated every person there. Dr. Freiss; I vaguely remember meeting you (was still drugged up) but thank you for fixing me up and coming to visit me. My visit to OHSU was unexpected to say the least, but I "kneeded" it. It showed me that experiences can still be positive in hard times, who matters is the community and team around you. I truly felt cared for, loved even. Thank you for being amazing people. On the mend, stay safe, and all my hugs to you!

The most amazing Children's hospital from Georgia to Portland. Honestly its a whole new level of care comfort and understanding. Thank you Doernbecher's ❤️
I took my mother to see her PCP for nausea and stomach pains after days of her dealing with it at home. After examination her PCP told us to go get her checked in at the top of the hill in emergency. After hours of waiting to be seen they did not have any beds available and my almost 70 year old mother had to lay on the hard ground in extreme pain. After taking her for scans, blood work, labs and other tests it was discovered that my mom has cancer in multiple places. They decided to keep her overnight, after receiving this horrible news they finally had a bed for my mom but no room. She had to lay in the hallway with other lined up beds of patients. My mom had no privacy to even process this life changing news and had to lay in a hallway crying with random people including construction guys who were doing construction at 5am. She had to listen to banging construction noise all night and couldn't even get sleep. On top of that she had some Dr. Melissa somebody who has no bedside manner basically tell her that her cancer is inoperable and she is going to die. My mom was all alone with no family there to comfort her, this was the worst experience of her life. We absolutely will not be returning to this ER ever. I understand they are doing construction and their beds are limited but then they should give them the option to be transferred to another location. Nobody should be treated the way my mom was at OHSU Emergency Dept. Please go somewhere else!!!!
I had a disappointing experience when calling to schedule an appointment at OHSU. The staff member I spoke with came across as condescending and unhelpful, which made the process uncomfortable. I understand healthcare settings can be busy, but clear and respectful communication is important especially when patients are already dealing with health concerns.
There are a lot of reasons why this place is so great. I can specifically speak for 10A. The nursing staff is wonderful and kind and eager to help. They are quick to help their patients and do it with a smile. The people make this place! There are also currently nearly 800(!) volunteers total in the hospital that are there specifically to make patients' stay more comfortable. The volunteer program is well organized and that shows by the level of training and scheduling. And the view of Portland is awesome!
