I was there this morning at 10 AM for an appointment. I was seen by a technician and she did some eye testing. I waited until 1130 for my 10 AM appointment with the doctor and I left my time is valuable too. She told me they see 40 patients a day – – that’s five minutes per patient if they’re working an eight hour day run don’t walk away from this place. I cannot recommend it: you wait and wait until you nearly fall over in the chair. It’s totally unacceptable. I don’t care how good the doctors are, but it’s not worth waiting for Do Not go there. there are lots of other Eye centers in Kansas City area..

They’re only getting one star because I can’t leave 1/2 star. The only reason I’d even leave a 1/2 star is because the Dr was very pleasant and nice and could take a clue! At the beginning of my autistic 9 year old son’s appointment, I discreetly advised the provider my son had an anxiety around the eye drops. She got it. The female tech, while very sweet and patient, missed it even after she saw my son freak out when she mentioned the eye drops. Even still, she came back in the room saying “I heard we are ready for eye drops!” while slapping on her gloves! Apparently, she doesn’t know that announcing you’re going to do something beforehand that a person dreads can trigger them! If that wasn’t enough, the male tech was very impatient and abrupt. You could tell he had been pulled away from doing something else to come help her and he had zero patience for a child with high needs. I calmly explained that my son was autistic and he didn’t like the eye drops because they burned. I asked them if they had a fidget to distract him, to which the female tech literally gave him a piece of TISSUE to hold onto! I told them that wasn’t going to work. The male tech snapped at me and said, “Well, did YOU bring something for him?” in an attempt to parent-shame me. I told him getting the eye drops hadn’t crossed my mind, to which he replied that is “standard.” Well, excuse the heck out of me for expecting a PEDIATRIC provider’s office to have a plan of action for distracting kids since they know the eye drops burn like he!!! Moreover, there was literally a box of toys sitting on a shelf nearby so not sure why in the wide, wide world they gave him a piece of tissue?! I told my son to go look in the box of toys. While my son picked through the toys, the male tech said in an abrasive tone, “let me know when you guys are ready!” And dashed out the room. First of all, I didn’t understand why he was he even there. He was making the situation worse! Initially, my son did willingly go to the chair and lie back, but as soon as he got the first drop it burned so he wouldn’t cooperate anymore. He jumped up and ran away and wouldn’t get back in the chair. The male tech explained that they could not get hit or kicked, which of course is understandable. He then announced in front of my son that he needed me to hold his legs down or put him in a bear hug as if he was not sitting right there listening. Umm, that strategy may work for an infant, toddler, but not a fully cognizant individual. I’d like to see his big grown self lie still after hearing someone was going to hold him down to do something painful! I could see the panic in my son’s eyes when he heard that so I didn’t immediately do anything. I was waiting for the right time to catch him off guard. But the male tech would have none of this waiting business and was growing more impatient. He snorted that I either needed to hold his legs down or reschedule and come back with “someone else who could control him” because that was their protocol not to get hit or kicked. I wanted to ask what was their protocol for trauma-informed care. But the male tech grew even more irritated and impatient with my gentle approach and decided he needed to take a firm stance. He looked at my son and said in a very harsh tone “Listen, BUDDY, we’ve GOT to do this to get your eye exam done!” When that didn’t work, the male tech left the room in a huff and said we needed to move out of the exam room into another room while we figured it out. They basically have no clue how to deal with children with special needs or phobias. I was really surprised and disappointed to see the lack of compassion and professionalism at KU, a premiere teaching hospital. We left the office with one of my son’s eyes dilated and will not return! To KU Ophthalmology: Hire more techs so they are not overwhelmed and treat patients in this manner AND better train the ones you have on TRAUMA-INFORMED care! To Everyone else: Go to Children’s Mercy!
Dr Boxterman is careless about his patients, never recommend other to be seen by him. Appointment takes month and if u be late they don’t care you and u hv to wait another three to 4 months since u r hurry to be seen by the doctor immediately. We hv seen by Dr JAMIE L WEISER, she is excellent and I recommend all to schedule with here. She gets 10 out of 10 for her professionally approaching with the patient and she is very kind.
I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the service I received while attempting to schedule a glaucoma screening for my husband. After wasting a week navigating the referral paperwork process, I spoke with a representative named Carla, who was remarkably condescending and evasive. I had to ask four times before she would finally disclose that there is no appointment availability for any provider for the next six months. The combination of bureaucratic inefficiency, lack of transparency, and unprofessional behavior was disappointing.
Mayra, the optician at the pediatric eye clinic is absolutely wonderful. She has excellent communication skills with children. She goes out of her way to be sure my children have properly fitting glasses. She is kind and patient. We drive 4 hours each way to come to KU, and it is worth every effort to go to such a place of excellence. They also accommodate my four children so their appointments are back to back with Dr Weiser. We have had an excellent experience with Dr Weiser. We could not be happier with our experience.
