The quality of care was fine; the intake assistant was really nice and thorough, and the booking process was easy. My issue was with my experience with the Dr. herself. When she came in after I answered all questions over about 40 minutes with the intake assistant. She asked me if I had a history of sickle cell anemia; I don’t. I thought she was referring to something that she saw in my results. She didn’t explain why she asked, so I started to get a bit nervous. She asked a few more questions, and kinda moved on. But I brought her back to the sickle cell question, and asked if there was something wrong. She responds, “no, we just ask all of our black patients that question and they must have missed it on the form”. As if there is some sort of specific form for African Americans. I then responded, “you only ask black people such as question”? She responded by simply saying “yes”. I’m not sure if she realizes that While the sickle cell trait is most prevalent in people of African descent, it is absolutely not exclusive to them. It is also found in populations with Hispanic, Southern European, Middle Eastern, and South Asian ancestry. She’s Hispanic, so I was very confused and concerned for other patients who might need to be asked the same question. Not just “black patients”. She was also pretty condescending. Giving me some sort of a kudos that I understood some medical terminology. As if I’m not supposed to understand simple English and the meaning behind simple medical terminology. This is optometry, not heart surgery. We understand normal, simple terminology as Black people. Lastly, getting into the building and through the elevator was a huge headache, just to make it to the office. The security downstairs was very rude, and provided zero assistance as to how the process worked. Overall. I ended up ordering the glasses that she suggested and paid quite a bit of money, in cash. Her expertise as an optometrist was great. I just think certain demographics should think twice before making the decision to go there. Just my own opinion, from my own experience.
Had an eye appointment with Dr. Perez today and she did an awesome job! Her entire staff was welcoming, helpful, and professional. I’m so happy to have her as my eye doctor and highly recommend this office!
I love Dr. Perez and her staff! They’re always so friendly and I always have a pleasant time. Dr. Perez is so knowledgeable and has helped me with challenges I face when it comes to my eyes and vision. Would recommend her if you’re looking for a new optometrist!
