Haines Vision Care is the BEST eye doctor office in the area! I called on a Friday afternoon after a "no call/no show/office closed and door locked" experience at the office I had been going to for years and was able to get a first-time patient appointment for the following Monday. Dr. Haines was extremely patient with my frustrations regarding my last-minute appointment with him and profoundly knowledgeable. He worked WITH me in getting the proper prescription for my glasses, which was WAY off base from the ones that I was wearing. Yes, I was aware. I had not been able to see properly for nearly TWO YEARS; however, not having the education or equipment to test my own eyes, I had to follow the provider that leading me! Clearly, the blind leading the blind. Pun intended. A follow-up appointment was made to fit me for contacts a few months later, to ensure that my eyes had adjusted to the new, correct glasses prescription. Once again, I was not disappointed. Service was top-notch, from walking in the door to leaving the building. I have referred two others to Dr. Haines since then and the one person who has made the time to see him at this point in time has raved along with me! Professional. Courteous. Patient. Knowledgeable. Caring. Forward-thinking. Dr. Haines and his office staff are #1 in customer service and productivity.

Dr. Haines is a kind and professional eye doctor who cares about his patients. His staff are all very courteous and friendly too. As a first-time patient, I had a great experience.
Yesterday, my 9 yr old son developed a red, swollen, and painful eye near his tear duct. It was very sudden and kept getting more swollen. I am a patient of this office, but my son has never been there. I called the office and explained the situation and that I wasn't sure what to do. Should he be seen by his pediatrician or should he see the eye doctor. The receptionist told me that they could see him and to come in and gave me an early morning appointment. We arrived, filled out the new patient patient paperwork and was brought back to a room. We waited in the room for an hour and I hadn't seen or heard the doctor in the office, so I politely asked if it was going to be a while. The doctor came in a few minutes later, I said, "Goodmorning", he said, "Have I ever seen him before." "No, he hasn't been here before", I said. "Well how am I supposed to treat a patient that I've never seen before. I have no background or history on him and now here he is with an eye issue. He's nine years old and has never had an eye exam before!" While shaking his head. "I don't even know how you got him in the door since I've never seen him before." I explained to him how we noticed it yesterday, and I called the office, they told me to come in, etc. He examined my son's eye, touched it, and he started crying because it is painful. Dr. said, "How old are you?" My son said "Nine." Dr. said, "You're old enough, suck it up!". I was just in complete shock. Then said it's an infection, he needs antibiotics, asked me which antibiotics he has ever taken in the past, etc. I told him. I asked what type of infection he thought it was and was it contagious. He said, "I don't know. I guess as long as nobody touches his eye, they'll be fine." Then proceeds to ask me what dosage of Amox he should get. I told him I have no idea. He said, "Now I have to jump thru hoops and call his pediatrician to find out what dosage I should give him." Then we walked to the front desk and the receptionist called the peds office for us. That was the entire appointment, I almost walked out in tears, my son was in tears. I felt so belittled and couldn't believe a doctor could be so rude and nasty. I will never go there again! I was being very polite the whole time because I didn't want any confrontation and just want my son to feel better.
I will preface this by saying, I NEVER write reviews for places. However, the Doctor here is horribly rude. The absolute worst experience I have ever had from a medical professional has hands down been from Dr. Haines. If you are this grouchy and miserable, please dont take it out on people. Hire another doctor to help you. I made an appointment here after having to be on medicaid and needing a renewal for my contact prescription. This location was one of the only offices in Smithfield that takes Medicaid and/or has available space for new Medicaid patients. I went today. My appointment was at 2:30pm. I got there 15 minutes early to fill out paperwork since I am a new patient. Finished within 5 minutes. I waited nearly 45 minutes while people who came in after me got seen before me. I checked with the front desk to see if there was an update on my appointment because it has been a while. Im a very patient and kind person, so im obviously not going to be mad at them, its not their fault. They tell me one person is in front of me and if i'd still like to wait. I say okay, yes thank you and wait another 15 minutes while people are still getting called before me. Finally I get in and im assisted by the technician. I will say, the only positive thing about this place was the staff. They were all nice and the saving grace of this place. They take me to the exam room where Dr. Haines comes in about two minutes later. I say 'hi, how are you?". He ignores me and just says you ready. I answer yes and he asks what im here for, glasses or contacts. I take a second to think because technically both but really just needing an update on my prescription, thinking if i say contacts without context, he will think I want to order contacts there when I do that myself online. He looks at me with a face and sighs saying its not a trick question. I say im there to update my prescription and he talks over me saying "how can i update a prescription when theres nothing here, theres nothing to update that doesnt make sense. Are you here for contacts or glasses". I say I am wearing contacts, as I took them out for the exam and he says I need to stop asking questions, stop and answer his question. Literally stops me to say I need to answer his question. I almost left right then. I was not rude to this man or anyone in the building. To receive this level of unprofessional behavior from a medical provider was astonishing. We continue with the exam and I tell him to the best of my ability what brand of contacts I use and the strength as I wasnt told to bring anything to this appointment. He questions me again after I tell him my prescription, talking down to me and says he doesnt think thats right and that if it were that, my prescription is too high. He said he was just going to do glasses fitting, I had to come back to do a contact exam, and didnt even do a dilation which they had asked me about previously. I am in the post exam section waiting to be seen by the technician for a glasses fitting and someone else was there waiting. I ask her if the doctor was the same one who did her exam and asked if he was rude to her too. She said no and I explain what happened and was seeing if this was a common occurrence. Maybe he had a bad day (does not excuse the behavior) or if this was just how he is. I have read reviews that he is not kind to patients who have Medicaid. Perhaps this is a pattern of behavior at this location. I am doing the glasses fitting and the kind lady helps me pick what the insurance covers. I just chose the one to my liking as I wear contacts 99% of the time so it doesn't matter too much to me. She is asking me if I would like to go ahead and schedule the future contact exam. I ask her if he is the only doctor in this location, she says yes, and I explain to her what happened. She was very kind and apologized for him(again, the staff is great aside from the Doctor). Told her that if it is just him, I don't know if I would be back so I paid my bill and left nearly 1 hour and 30 minutes later.
Dr Haines and the entire staff are both very friendly and very professional. They are caring and take the time to listen and explain exams and results throughout the visit. I couldn't be more pleased with the care i have received from Haines Vision Care.
