Eye sight is important and your eyes are your guides. Whether you're young or old they need care. And when you age, it's even more important. At my age (70's) many things can happen to the human body, that's why medical exams are important. I follow the book when it comes to this. Because of Cataracts and Glaucoma, and other eye diseases, I have to be careful. I had my annual exam the other day. The Cataract problem hasn't progressed, and they're watching for Glaucoma. So far so good. I'm a patient of the U of R , Flaum Eye Institute. When I first started going there I was assigned Dr. Ruba Muhtaseb, a highly skilled, well educated Opthalmologist. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors (MD or DO) who undergo 12–14+ years of training, including four years of medical school, a one-year internship, and a three-year ophthalmology residency. They study comprehensive eye care, specializing in medical and surgical treatments for diseases like cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration, with 40-50% of residency spent in the operating room.Educational PathwayUndergraduate Studies (4 years): Bachelor's degree with pre-med requirements.Medical School (4 years): Focus on general medicine and basic sciences.Internship (1 year): General medical or surgical training.Residency (3 years): Specialized hospital-based training in medical and surgical eye care.Fellowship (1-2 years, Optional): Subspecialty training in areas like Retina, Glaucoma, Pediatric Ophthalmology, or Cornea.Key Study Areas & TrainingDuring residency, training focuses on developing skills to manage complex eye conditions, including:Surgical Training: Residents often perform over 200 cataract surgeries, in addition to corneal and glaucoma procedures.Clinical Specialties: Pediatric ophthalmology, neuro-ophthalmology, refractive surgery, and oculoplastics.Diagnostic Imaging: Mastery of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and angiography.Ophthalmology ResearchResidency programs often require research projects. Key research areas include:Pediatric Vision: Evaluating quality of life and outcomes in children.Retinal Diseases: Advancements in macular degeneration treatments.Artificial Intelligence & Imaging: Improving diagnostic tools for glaucoma and neuro-ophthalmology.Licensure & Board CertificationAfter training, ophthalmologists must pass medical licensing exams and achieve board certification, often through the American Board of Ophthalmology, requiring ongoing continuing medical education. I can't say enough good about Dr. Mutaseb. She is great Dr., professional, friendly, and polite. She takes her time, explains what is going on, what could happen in the future. You feel good when you leave her office... :) I highly recommend Dr. Ruba Muhtaseb if you need eye care.

Today I had the pleasure of being a new patient of Dr. Hiral Patel at the Genneseo campus. I was treated wonderfully by all staff members. In particular, Dr. Patel had given me a very thorough eye exam. I was diagnosed with something I was not expecting. I will be going back in 3 months to see her again. I am aware of the situation. Dr. Patel treated me brilliantly. I have every confidence in her. I highly recommend this eye care facility!
