I miss the days when this was City Optometry with Drs. Penza and Marioka. I came in today for my annual eye exam, expecting the same positive experience I’ve had over the last 20 years. Unfortunately, this visit was the complete opposite. The staff has always been friendly and welcoming, but today the interaction felt cold from the start. Less than five minutes after check-in, an assistant escorted me into another room to have retinal photos taken without first explaining why they were needed or that there would be an additional charge. When I questioned it, I was told my options were to have my eyes dilated at no cost or pay for the retinal photos. I hesitated because this wasn’t how it had been presented during my previous visits. Instead of taking a moment to explain the reasoning, the doctor came out and said, “You have to do this or the other, or I can’t prescribe you anything.” While I understand that a complete eye health evaluation is important, the way it was communicated felt more like an ultimatum than a discussion. I likely would have chosen the retinal photos, as I have in the past, had the options been explained respectfully. The interaction came across as aggressive, dismissive, and unprofessional. Because of how I was treated, I chose to leave before the exam was completed. After many years as a patient, this experience was disappointing, and unfortunately it will be my last visit to this office.

I had a fantastic experience working with Charles Hossle. He provided assistance at every level; he listened to my needs and guided me through various frame options to suit all of them. He also offered excellent aesthetic suggestions that I wouldn’t have found on my own. I’m confident that I found the best one-stop shop for all my eye care needs.
They added some exams that we did not discuss to the bill, and later informed me that the fees were collected from there. I feel a bit misled and cheated. There’s a lack of transparency, and I’ve never had that issue with City Eyeworks. I only booked this place because every other place in town ran out of availability towards the end of the year. However, it’s not a place I’ll ever return to. For anyone reading this, please triple-check whether they’re charging you for the exams you actually requested.
I went to get my glasses fixed (new lenses) and they broke them. No replacement. I’m just out a pair of glasses now. Yep. Disappointed. The eye doctors are great btw.
Extremely disappointed!!!! I scheduled a routine eye exam with insurance and a $10 copay. During my visit, the office performed a retinal screening (S9986) without explaining that it was optional or that it would cost extra. I was later charged $39 out of pocket for this test. Patients should be clearly informed and asked for consent before any non-covered services are performed. Be sure to ask about all additional charges in advance!
