I previously visited this location several years ago and had a positive experience with Dr. Head which is why I thought I’d come back for an appointment. Reflecting on this recent experience, there was definitely a change in the quality of treatment. I asked who I would be seeing during my appointment, when I found out that it wasn’t Dr. Head, I hesitated but confirmed the appointment because I figured I’d have a similar experience. Overall, the appointment was professional; however, I left feeling discouraged by aspects of the visit. As someone living with a lifelong visual condition, you could image that I’ve been to many eye appointments. I did not feel that portions of the screening process were particularly low-vision friendly although the website stated low-vision is a service. Multiple stimuli and screening materials were presented at a distance that did not allow me to confidently respond, and limited adjustments appeared to be made to accommodate my visual needs or ensure testing was reflective of my actual functioning. I would have appreciated a more individualized and accessible approach. During the appointment, Social Security disability was introduced as something “to know what is out there” by Dr. Brtva. While I understand this may have been intended as helpful information, I found it odd that this was discussed without meaningful conversation around visual supports, accommodations, adaptive strategies, or resources that may better support independence and functioning first. Additionally, pre-appointment paperwork indicated that dilation would be apart of the exam process and instead I received retinal imaging. When I asked whether retinal imaging replaces dilation, I was informed that it does not, which raised concerns about whether the exam was as comprehensive as expected If you have an eye condition that strays from standard treatment, I would encourage you not to visit. The frame options are also very outdated and attempting to call the office and speak to someone seems to be very difficult.
