I have been Dr Shapiro's patient for over 5 yrs, and I found him to be professional and knowledgeable. When he discovered 1 small cataract in each of my eyes, he promptly referred me to Cornerstone Surgery Center. Great Results! Thomas Longwell, Optician, works in tandem with Dr Shapiro from an office in the same building. Really cool, and has a great selection of frames. A Receptionist sets the tone for every patient's visit to their Doctor. Some of the responsibilities that come with a position such as this one are: respect for patients, being knowledgeable, helpful, be a skilled communicator, and be kind. I found Dr Shapiro's Receptionist to be the opposite. She commented, within my earshot, on a visit to a small island country that I am familiar with. She spoke so unkindly of the inhabitants that I was taken aback! There were also inaccuracies in her diatribe. Not a good look!

The doctor is very quiet but nice and knowledgeable. Equipment is old and might take longer than the usual for eye exams. I didn't mind since I was in no rush. I went for glasses and contacts, unfortunately my eyesight is too bad for the contacts they made so they referred me to another doctor. Which I appreciated immensely, because my previous ophthalmologist preferred to keep this information from me and tried to fit me with contacts that didn't fully correct my vision and I obviously lost my money.
So I’ve been going to this ophthalmologist for about 4 years now. I have been going to this man when I (at the time, superb insurance through work. I was going to two places.). Yet, he is timely, efficient, yes I know not the talker-type. Dr. Shapiro has been a fair ophthalmologist to me. Given the demographics he services I feel that people are still getting better care here than somewhere else. Especially when you have certain types of eye insurance. Also his separate (in house though) optometrist is a pretty cool dude too. At first, for me, he did not have glasses that suited my face. Yet the two pairs I have are from him. I plan to get my next set there too. Got those “rapper- style” glasses.
Both the ophthalmologist and optometrist are very sweet and helpful. They worked with me to get me the contacts and eye glasses I needed. They take all the insurance plans that other eye care centers do not which is also awesome. The only reason I am giving them 3 stars is because the wait time can be excessive. Expect to spend at least 1 hour, not due to slow staff, but because the staff does take time and care with each patient.
I agree with other reviews about long wait time and old equipment, but he was very nice and answered all my questions. I still have the glass that I was prescribed 8 years ago. It is not broken but I could see small crack line on the side. Not complain at all.
