DO NOT GO TO ELMWOOD EYE CENTER! This place has gone down hill so fast! I had been seeing Dr Grandas for many years and followed him to Elmwood when he made the move. He was amazing and all of the ladies working with him (who have now also left) were amazing. He left and Dr Hess took over his clients. she is great and I don't think the disaster the office has turned into is her fault. My son and I went for our exams back on April 1. They were a little late taking us back, which ok I get it. When they called us back the lady had no idea where to go with us because all of the rooms were full. We went on a tour of the place because she had to walk us through both sides of the building to figure out what room to put us in. We were at our appointments for 2 1/2 hours. We have always booked our appointments back to back since my son starting seeing an eye dr and we are usually out of there in an hour. Dr Hess ordered me trial contacts and I was told they would be in within 1-2 weeks. 3 weeks later I send a portal message and was told they were still waiting on a second one and they would call when they are in. A month and a half later I reach out again because I still hadn't heard anything. Magically they were delivered that morning. I called to set up an appointment because the Dr wanted to check them, but she was leaving for her honeymoon so I had to wait another week to get in. I went in for my appointment May 26 (now almost 2 months after my initial exam). The tech takes me back to have me put in the contacts. A little while later she comes back out and says she had me put in the wrong contacts so I had to put in different ones. I make the change and she says the Dr will see me in 5-10 minutes. Mind you this is now 30 mins past my appointment time. My appointment was at 2:15, at 3:00 I still had not seen the Dr and I needed to get home to my kids. I told the tech that I needed to leave and she was understanding and said the office would reach out to me to see how the trials were doing. It's now 2 days later and I haven't heard a thing! I will absolutely be leaving this office and recommending that everyone avoids this place. The inorganization is baffling.

I am now over 6 weeks post op on the right, 4 on the left. My only negative on Elmwood was the long wait, nearly 2 months for the evaluation but the first surgery was in 2 weeks the second in 4 weeks and I left the evaluation appointment with a folder containing the pre and post op instructions, my appointments scheduled, and the kit for pre and post care, eye drops, glasses etc. This efficiency is rare. The surgeries went as well. The day after I was seeing much better and I have had no negatives. The followup from Elmwood and UPMC hospital where the surgery was done was great. I have my last appointment next week. I did not opt to have astigmatism correction and got mono focal lens so I am wearing glasses. This decision was based on a lot of reading, the monofocals and glasses looked like the best option for me. I am 2020 and better color and shade definition, was marginal 2040 and was having problems if print did not have enough contrast. Elmwood is a class act.
The care I received at Elmwood Eye Center was above and beyond. The doctor heard my concerns and took the time needed to work through a solution. The entire staff was professional, patient, and caring with me, my special needs daughter and my two teenage sons. Great family atmosphere! Highly recommended!
I rarely leave reviews, but I wanted to take a moment to express my appreciation. I had a piece of metal debris fall into my eye while working on my vehicle and could not get it out. My wife and children are patients at Elmwood Eye Center so I reached out to them first thing this morning to see if they could help. Not only did they fit me quickly, both Dr. Kerchner and Dr. Hess were caring, compassionate and extremely competent. They examined my eyes, extracted the debris, prescribed antibiotics and enabled me to get back to normal activities. Needless to say, I would highly recommend Elmwood Eye Center!!
Wish I could give 0 stars. I came in on 9/4/25 for a simple adjustment to my glasses (my nose pads were loose and Elwood has fixed them for me many times over the years). When I walked into the office, it was chaos. While in the lobby, I heard a loud commotion—either someone slamming a door or throwing books on the ground—and someone screaming the F-word over and over. When I asked who it was, I was told it was the office manager. I don’t know for sure who the manager is, but I’m pretty sure it was the woman with dark hair, as she was very animated when I peeked my head around the corner. Honestly, that is completely unacceptable and unprofessional. What if I had a child with me? I decided to leave right away, and unfortunately, I’ll be looking for another eye doctor. This place has really gone downhill since I first started coming here a few years ago. Hopefully they address this problem so nobody else has to walk into such a negative space.
