⭐ 1 star I called Vision Consultants of Wilton ahead of time specifically to ask whether they accepted HUSKY for my toddler’s glasses and was told yes. What they did not tell me was that HUSKY would only cover the lenses there and that I would be responsible for the entire cost of the frames. That seems like extremely relevant information to disclose when someone calls specifically to ask about their insurance coverage. The experience once we arrived made an already uncomfortable situation much worse. The optometrist was initially very nice, but when she asked about our insurance and I told her my son has HUSKY, her demeanor visibly changed. She frowned, walked all the way to the back, and essentially disappeared from the interaction. The receptionist then showed us two pairs of basic, non-designer toddler frames. They were $240. It was only at that point that I was told HUSKY would pay for the lenses but not the frames, meaning I would have to pay the $240 myself. I felt embarrassed and blindsided. I simply said I needed to think about it because $240 was far more than I had expected to spend on basic toddler frames. Unfortunately, what happened as we left made the entire experience feel even worse. There were Amazon packages sitting in the hallway near the exit. We walked past them and headed down the stairs. Almost immediately, the optometrist came out to retrieve the packages and repeatedly looked down the stairs toward us. After the noticeable change in demeanor immediately following the disclosure that my son has HUSKY, the timing and staring made me feel watched and suspected. It was humiliating. I left feeling very much like my son and I did not belong there. No parent should be made to feel ashamed because of the insurance their child has. The irony is that I came home and ultimately purchased my son Ralph Lauren frames online that included prescription frames, all for about one quarter of what this office quoted me for their basic, no-name frames. I would not return. What should have been a completely ordinary trip to get glasses for my toddler instead left me feeling judged, embarrassed, and unwelcome.
I have been a patient of Vision Consultants for most of my adult life. First in the Stamford office with Dr. Castaldi, then the Wilton office. Luis Garcia made my glasses for years. I now travel from Bridgeport to to Wilton to see Dr. A, who is very thorough, patient and caring. He reviews my history every time and has been very accurate with my prescriptions, always encouraging me to come back if anything feels off. I have purchased many pairs of very high-quality frames there in the past. While more expensive than other places, the frames last and are timeless. I just put new lenses in my old frames because they stood up to style. They always give me my prescription on paper so I have the choice of buying glasses or contacts from them or somewhere else—no questions asked. If you want an eye doctor that knows you, remembers you, it is worth it. It is to me.
My family has been a customer for ~5 years, - They always squeeze me in for a quick appointment when I have a glasses emergency (with 3 kids, glasses don't last) - They have cutting edge tech, which means you don't need dilation drops and a blast of pressurized air into your retina - They're always nice to me almost over the top nice. - The doctor there knows my favorite eye doctor I had in NYC. Good people know good people. - I don't understand the negative reviews. The first time I came in (based on my wife's recommendation) I did have a tense moment with a guy who doesn't seem to work there anymore, but even that instance was put behind us, and I was able to interact with this guy for years just fine.
I can’t recommend Vision Consultants of Wilton enough! They are incredibly attentive, kind, and always take the time to explain my charts and test results, making sure I fully understand everything. I’ve been going for years, and it’s consistently the best doctor experience I’ve had. The entire practice and staff are just wonderful!
